Sam Congdon In A Nutshell

Sam Congdon came from humble beginnings. He grew up in an orchard farm where he learned how to work hard. This formed the basis of his perception in hard work, a virtue that has remained with him to this date. His humble background did not stop him from wanting to achieve more. He excelled well in school and later went to Hillsdale College for a degree in Bachelor of Science in economics. While in college, he made sure that he applied practically what he had learned by taking the challenging job of being a manager in the Student Works Painting. By the time he was attaining his degree, he had acquired a lot of management experience that proved to be useful in his future career.

He was not comfortable with just one degree, because after graduation, Sam Congdon enrolled for a one-year course in a Bible school. Upon completion, he felt it best to undertake a second degree in Master of Business Administration in the prestigious Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas. This exposed him to more aspects and knowledge of running a business. It prepared him for more challenging roles in management such as the one he undertook while still in the graduate school, of managing other managers in the Student Works Painting.

The skills and knowledge he acquired over the years have proved useful in his recent undertakings. He was able to turn around the Compass services company within a few months of managing it, and therefore selling it at a better price. Sam Congdon also bought a hostel in Puerto Rico, which he has been managing to profitability while increasing customer ratings. At the same time, he has been managing another hostel in San Juan, Puerto Rico that also has received improved customer ratings.

Despite working hard, he also believes in family, having fun and keeping fit. He and his wife have a son who has brought the amazing experience of being a father. Sam Congdon has developed a love for travelling and of tropics. He has travelled to many Caribbean islands and Mexico in areas such as Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Antigua, Nevis and St. Kitts, Ecuador, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Belize. He enjoys visiting areas such as Belize to see fish, sharks and rays. He has also visited other countries such as The Netherland Antilles, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, England, The Isle of Man, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Austria, Holland, The United Arab Emirates, Albania, Panama, Venezuela, Nepal, Thailand and India.

He also enjoys visiting Lake Chelan in his hometown in Washington State. He loves jumping in the clean water and visiting the town of Stehekin, which is at the head of the lake. Fossil Rim in Texas is also another place where he enjoys spending his time feeding giraffes. It has different animals, which roam freely while people drive around in cars.

To keep fit and for fun, he plays ultimate Frisbee, a game he learned to play ten years ago. It is a game that he has captained league and tournament games.

Sam Congdon and the Puerto Rico Business

In his travelling, one place that Sam Congdon visited is Puerto Rico. He had gone to the place almost 40 times although most of the time he spent on the airport. He began looking into getting a business in the area and the opportunity to purchase property worked very well. In 2012, he co-founded a hostel in Puerto Rico called Moonlight Bay Hostel. They found a property that was close to the major port where boats take guests to a couple of islands off the coast of Puerto Rico. The area also has some amount of walking and foot traffic. The hostel has done well and has given him the opportunity to travel and spend time Puerto Rico on many occasions. He has been able to go for a run on the beach on New Year’s Day, something that one cannot do in Dallas.

While in the area, he has also visited Culebra, an island off the coast of Puerto Rico. The island is so small that people use golf carts to drive around it. It also has a beautiful beach called Flamenco beach that is regularly rated as one of the top beaches in the Caribbean. He was able to take his son there who loved the place. His son played in the waves the whole day and it was the first time he had been to the ocean since infancy. Sam Congdon and his son had a great time diving through the waves, bobbing up and down, swimming around, playing in the sand and doing all the things that people do in the ocean and the beach.

Having his business in Puerto Rico has also opened other opportunities because in 2013, he became the chief operating officer of The Palace Hostel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This was an existing guesthouse, and he took control of all the operational and financial operations. He oversaw the upgrades and improvements of the property in addition to managing financial and operational aspects of the hostel. He was also involved in the hiring and training the full time staff. Customer ratings of the hostel improved dramatically from what the previous management had. This means that the guesthouse improved its service provision as well as in the facilities. All this could not be achieve without having the right staff to do the job, something that Sam Congdon ensured.

To run these businesses, Sam Congdon relied on the knowledge and experience that he has acquired over time. This is from his younger days in the orchard farm where he learned how to work hard, to his college days when he worked in Student Works Painting both as a manager and as a general manager. He knows that to achieve results, there is no shortcut but to work hard and be diligent. This has been evidence of the success stories of the hotels and of other businesses that he is running. He also knows that it is not all work all the time. That is why he has found time to enjoy what the Puerto Rico area has to offer in the form of beautiful beaches.

Diverse Management Experience And Skills of Sam Congdon

Managing is not new to Sam Congdon. Over the years, he has gained a wealth of experience in managing different businesses. While his hardworking skills were nurtured in childhood, his management skills were nurtured in college when he started working as a manager in the Student Works Painting. Though the first time it was challenging to combine his studies and the management, and commuting long distance when working, it served as a learning phase, which taught him valuable lessons that he has continued to use to this day.

The other summers as the manager were easy because now he had the experience in addition to reducing the commuting time. He was also familiar with the duties expected of a manager. While in graduate school, he managed to work as a general manager for Student Works Painting in Ohio, a task that required that he manage other managers. This was a good experience for him and he was able to use his previous experience and tricks he had learned as a manager to teach the managers. He earned their respect and the summer was successful despite the challenges of dealing with less than qualified staff.

Sam Congdon management skills did not end there because after college, he has taken part in other management roles. One of the notable ones is by being the founder and the chief executive officer of Compass Services in Richardson, Texas. In the company, he was responsible for all the operational activities, to achieve profitability and to sell the business. He had the complete responsibility for profit and loss goals and achievements and for forecasting and budgeting. He was in charge of implementing and managing all aspects of a successful marketing campaign, he created and oversaw software customization in order to automate sales, data entry, customer service, customer retention and reporting. He also oversaw all the functions of human resources such as hiring, training, disciplining, rewarding and firing. Monthly profitability was achieved within nine months of opening the business and revenues reached almost $100k per month within 12 months of accepting new clients. He also successfully negotiated and managed the sale of the business.

Sam Congdon continued to use his management experience to achieve more because in 2012, he founded and profitably operated Moonlight Bay Hostel in Puerto Rico, something that he does to this date. He successfully negotiated the purchase of the property and managed all construction and improvement projects to ready the property for commercial lodging use. He hired and trained all full-time staff while managing all financial and operational aspects of the business. Under his management, the first six months of business achieved nearly 90% customer satisfaction rating.

While still in Puerto Rico, Sam Congdon became the Chief operating officer of The Palace Hostel in San Juan in 2013. This was another test for his management abilities, which turned out to be a success. He took control of all operational and financial operations of the existing guesthouse in a bid to turn it around. He oversaw upgrades and improvements to the existing property, hired and trained all full-time staff, managed all financial and operational aspects of the business and in the process improved customer ratings dramatically from previous management.

Interesting Thing About Detroit – Sam Congdon

Sam Congdon, spent a summer in Troy, Michigan. Troy is north of Detroit a few miles. That was in the mid 90s. Even then, Detroit wasn’t exactly an example of beauty and splendor, but it’s certainly going downhill since then. That’s a shame, really. To think that Detroit used to be a shining city on a hill of American industry. Ford and Chrysler have their headquarters there and of course Henry Ford invented the automobile in Detroit. So much can change in so little time. But this is what happens with socialism, statism or whatever you want to call it. I recently had a conversation with an employee of mine who ironically is a socialist, or a socialist anarchist – whatever that is. When I brought up the fact that socialism always ended in death and misery and that socialist countries have to put up walls to keep people in he gave the overused and tired answer: that the wrong people had been running socialist governments. I have yet to see the right people run socialist governments! But I digress. If Detroit was a socialist country they would have to put up walls to force people to stay in. But since they cannot people are free to leave. This is as close as we may ever come in the real world to an Atlas Shrugged scenario. Ayn Rand wrote Atlas Shrugged. It is a fictional book about all of the makers in society exiting stage left, leaving all the takers to fend for themselves. It’s fiction of course but it demonstrates a point. And Detroit is as close as we’ll probably ever come to an actual example of exactly that. Take a look:
